Cover of The Soils of Southern South Australia publicationNew     The soils of southern South Australia

James Hall, David Maschmedt and Bruce Billing
446 pages, full colour, includes maps, graphs, diagrams and images

The soils of southern South Australia describes the soil resources of the state's temperate or agricultural areas. Comprehensive information (based on all new data) on the nature, key features, distribution, potential and limitations of South Australia's soils is presented in the one volume.

  • 15 chapters each describing a South Australian soil group
  • Double-page spreads describe constituent subgroup soils or soil types
  • Photographs of representative soil profiles and landscapes highlight the characteristics of each soil
  • Emphasis is given to geological setting and soil-forming materials
  • Documents the nature, age and associated landscapes of the geological materials from which South Australia's soils have formed (including an image of each material)
  • Areas of shallow bedrock and associated soils are highlighted

This book has been produced by the Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation under its Soil and Land Program. The book is part documentation of the outcomes of this program which commenced in the mid 1980s.

It is published as Volume 1 of the South Australian Land and Soil Book Series, as well as Bulletin 56, Volume 1 of the Geological Survey of South Australia.

Volume 1: Soils, stratigraphy and engineering geology of near surface materials of the Adelaide Plains
Volume 2: Figures and plates
Volume 3: Appendices figures

Soils, stratigraphy and engineering geology of near surface materials of the Adelaide Plains documents results of geomechanical and soil test investigations of samples from 170 cored holes (benchmark sites) including:
  • tabular and graphical presentations with discussion and analysis
  • direct observations and measurements from each cored hole, presented on Composite Log Sheets to display groundwater intersections, textural, pedological, geological, and engineering descriptions
  • separate tabulation of derived values and indices
  • individual descriptions of soil and geological units, placed into context within the main geomorphic zones of the study area
  • indication of key geomechanical features for each unit and geomorphic zone
  • limited statistical analysis of the data for each text parameter
  • geomechanical problems relevent to building footing design.
